CADASIL is an inherited disease often misdiagnosed as MS or other neurological disorders.

CADASIL is considered a serious rare disease that is underdiagnosed.

CADASIL causes multiple strokes and TIAs in adults, even young adults, often without traditional cardiovascular risk factors.

CADASIL also causes progressive dementia due to multiple strokes and TIAs.

CADASIL symptoms result from damage of small blood vessels, especially those within the brain.

CADASIL patients may also have symptoms of seizures, migraines/headaches, cognitive impairment, dizziness and balance problems, vision disturbances, fatigue, PBA, and/or mood disorders that may include anxiety, depression, and apathy. A stroke or TIA may sometimes be the first symptom a patient experiences.

CADASIL is an acronym for:

Cerebral - relating to the brain

Autosomal Dominant - a form of inheritance in which one copy of am abnormal gene is sufficient for the development of a disorder

Arteriopathy - disease of the small arteries (blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart)

with Subcortical - relating to a specific area of the deep brain that is involved in higher functioning (voluntary movements, reasoning, memory)

Infarcts - tissue loss in the brain caused by lack of oxygen to the brain, which occurs when blood flow in the small arteries is blocked or abnormal

and Leukoencephalopathy - a disease of the brain caused by damage to the white matter
